Warning signs from the ground

Falls are a leading risk for DIY roof checks. Use binoculars or zoom photos from the lawn, sidewalks, and driveway before anyone considers stepping on a ladder.

Granules and gutters

Heavy granule loss shows up in downspout exits and splash blocks. Some shedding is normal on newer shingles; sudden increases after hail or wind merit follow-up.

Missing or lifted tabs

From across the street you may see uneven color bands or lifted corners along prevailing wind directions. Close-ups help when lighting is consistent.

Flashing and penetrations

Look at chimney sides, vent stacks, and wall intersections for bent metal, gaps, or caulking that has cracked away. Those junctions drive many slow leaks.

Ridge line and slopes

A visibly wavy ridge or sagging plane can indicate structural or decking issues. Compare your roofline with neighbors at similar ages when possible.

From the attic

With lights off, scan for daylight through the deck and for stains that follow rafter paths. Musty insulation after rain suggests water paths even when shingles look acceptable.
